There is lots of writing software available. However, you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful, distraction-free writing environment than OmmWriter.
The video below is from 2009 and so things have changed a little, including the music. A new version called Gaia (2017) has also been released. This has brought in new backgrounds, sounds, fonts and new export formats. However, the basic product is the same and it is a wonderful world in which to write.
The key feature that sets this software apart is the clean, calm, distraction-free writing environment. This is a tranquil world to inhabit, where the thoughts flow freely and gently.
The music encourages a peaceful, meditative state of mind, perfect for quietening any inner critic that might be lurking. For some the keyboard and ambient sounds may be unwelcome. Both sounds can be turned off if that is the case for you. However, there is something reassuring about hearing, as well as seeing, the words forming on the page. The soundscape it creates reminds me a little of Max Richter’s Blue Notebooks or Memoryhouse. It is incredibly evocative.
“OmmWriter is your own private writing room where you can close the door behind you to focus on your writing in peace. Everywhere you go, you have access to a beautiful distraction-free writing environment where your authentic voice is free to go where it is meant to go”.

The benefit of this software is that it does, as it claims, create a beautiful, distraction-free writing environment. Getting into the writing zone becomes much easier when you have a visual and audio prompt since all your senses learn “this is a space in which I write”. Additionally OmmWriter works in full-screen mode. This means that any distractions that may draw your attention away (e.g. email, social media, online news) fade into the background. Indeed, as you relax into the virtual world of OmmWriter then the hardest job may be dragging yourself back into the busy clammer of other online environments.
Remember this is a writing tool rather than a text editor. You can save your document in .txt, .omm, .doc, docx formats for text editing and export it in .pdf and email. It might seem frustrating not to be able to do everything in OmmWriter but remember the clutter-free environment is the secret of this software’s success.
As a company, OmmWriter’s thoughtfulness shines through in their pricing too. The user is asked to decide what they would like to pay, although a minimum of 6.20€ is asked at the time of writing. The quality of this writing software means that it is unsurprising that the average payment exceeds this. So whether you are writing a journal, novel, essay or blog, OmmWriter is a writing tool worth considering.
